OUR STORY

Lifeboat Family Skills

We are inspired by the tradition of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), where experienced volunteer seamen with intimate knowledge of the waters near the shores of their communities, came together to help anyone who found themselves in peril at sea.

The Lifeboat Family Skills Program for parents and caregivers (18+) of young people who are struggling with their mental health, has been developed collaboratively by knowledgeable parents and expert clinicians. Our facilitators are parents who have dedicated themselves to learning these skills and employing them in their family environments with truly transformational results.

We all had real difficulty finding information and practical help when our families were struggling. Determined that other families should have access to the very best of the skills we learned, and the opportunity to practice them with others who are “in the same boat,” we set out to build this program.

We’ve been where you are and are eager to help you to worry less, create calm and find hope for a brighter future.

Please join us when your life will let you. Our classes provide bite-sized presentations of concepts and skills that you can use immediately. Take the classes online or in-person, one at a time or in a series. The groups are small and confidential. Many classes are offered free of charge courtesy of our generous partner organizations.

How we work

Family Skills Program:
Empathy. Education. Empowerment.

Meeting You Where You Are.

We have all felt the rollercoaster of emotions that takes over when our loved ones are struggling. As the titles of the workshops suggest, we begin by acknowledging parents’ and caregivers’ experiences without any blame or judgement. This is uncharted territory for most families and having these thoughts and feelings can make us feel like we’re in over our heads.

Explaining Why Best Efforts Fall Flat.

We tend to bring our kids up the way that we were raised. These strategies are useful for guiding many young people, even others in the same family. However, those who struggle with their mental health can respond in unexpected ways and our efforts to correct their course may worsen the problems we’re trying to avoid. It’s no wonder we feel helpless and afraid.

Showing You How Small Changes Can Lead to Big Rewards.

When we understand what drives our loved ones’ behavior, the options for managing situations effectively really increase. We take you step by step through the process of developing the evidence-based skills that allow us to honour big emotions without escalating them. They make it possible for us to support our children in effective ways without abandoning our values or sacrificing our mental health. It’s still hard work sometimes, the difference is, now we know how to do it. And that feels great!
